Orion Chamber Choir is pleased to join Huddersfield Voices for their autumn concert at Gledholt Methodist Church.
Our contribution to the programme will include
Gerald Finzi “Seven Poems of Robert Bridges” – ‘a wide-ranging quintessentially English setting of lyrical poetry by Robert Bridges, resulting in seven of the finest unaccompanied part songs of the period.’
Morten Lauridsen “Nocturnes” – ‘a triptych of settings of Rilke, Pablo Neruda and James Agee … all three brimful of the exquisite beauty that is Lauridsen’s special possession’ (Manchester Evening News)
Here’s a reminder of our performance of one of the Noctures from September 2015
Join the choir to explore music from Tallis at Pentecost to Lukaszewski in Lent. Byrd, Mendelssohn Poulenc and Lauridsen are among the composers chosen to show how the liturgy has continued to inspire musicians and congregations through the generations.

“Sure on this shining night” – concert in Huddersfield Parish Church, UK, September 26th 2015
Paul Hindemith’s setting of a poem by Rainer Marie Rilke (1875-1926)
Ô la biche : quel bel intérieur
d’anciennes forêts dans tes yeux abonde ;
combien de confiance ronde
mêlée à combien de peur.
Tout cela, porté par la vive
gracilité de tes bonds.
Mais jamais rien n’arrive
à cette impossessive
ignorance de ton front.
This is one of six poems by Rilke composed in 1939 as “Six Chansons”. More about the work at http://imslp.org/wiki/6_Chansons_%28Hindemith,_Paul%29
English translation Sarah Wickham 2015
O doe, what lovely depths
of ancient forests in your eyes abound;
how much open trust
mixed with how much fear.
All this, borne by the brisk
graciousness of your bounds.
But nothing ever happens
to disturb that indifferent
artlessness of your brow.
Start the festive period with mulled wine, mince pies and a programme of rarely heard Christmas Oratorio by Camille SAINT SAËNS along with extracts from Handel Messiah and a capella works selected especially for the season of Advent.
